3/15/08 Newsletter: Still Fighting for Election Integrity in Oregon

March 15, 2008

Dear Supporters,

After a rest, we are back at work again to promote election integrity in Oregon. Our goals remain the same -- we oppose the counting of our votes by trade secret software and we demand verification of these secret election tallies by accurate and scientifically designed hand count samplings.

Our first effort to implement a verification law failed. Despite our strong opposition, a last minute "gut and stuff" of HB 3270 carried out by our Director of Elections, John Lindback, ended our opportunity in the 2007 session to pass an adequate election verification bill.

Our sights are now set on helping you to evaluate the positions of the 2008 SOS Candidates on these vital issues for Oregon's elections and for democracy in America. Please help us educate and evaluate these candidates by attending SOS candidate forums and sending us your feedback about their positions. We would like to include your observations in our analysis. Over the next month we will be posting the SOS Candidates' replies to our survey at our website. We'll present and evaluate their past voting records and positions on election integrity matters, and rank them on our Election Integrity scorecard. We hope you will visit often for updates that will help you choose the candidate that will move Oregon swiftly toward open and verified vote counting.

To learn more about the electoral crisis facing our nation, please attend a showing of the brilliant new documentary "Uncounted" next Tuesday evening at the First Unitarian Church. There is no more serious crisis facing our nation than the loss of citizen oversight over vote counting to large and influential private election system vendors with partisan ties. These vendors write the software that counts our votes. We can not allow this if we expect to keep our democracy.

Sincerely,

Oregon Voter Rights Coalition
