The Illusion of Democracy

Help us educate the public about Oregon's Vote-by-Mail system and the alarming state of our national election system. Bring our PowerPoint Presentation, The Illusion of Democracy: An Urgent Call to Action for National Election Reform, to your neighborhood or group meeting. Speakers from the Oregon Voter Rights Coalition (Oregon VRC) are available to give the presentation to interested groups. People who have seen it have expressed shock and astonishment when learning the otherwise unpublicized realities of our current election system.

Here's why Oregon VRC developed this presentation:

The mid-term elections of 2006 were fast approaching and election integrity activists across the country continued to be extremely worried over the alarming state of our election system. While other states have much more serious problems than we do here in Oregon, our paper ballots are counted on electronic tabulators manufactured and maintained by for-profit, highly partisan companies using secret software to determine the election results. Contrary to popular belief, various tests and studies have demonstrated that these systems are highly vulnerable. Oregon VRC developed this presentation for wide distribution in order to raise awareness of this serious problem.

Description of the presentation:

In a democratic republican form of government such as ours, where people place the political power in the hands of their representatives, voting is the only legitimate way to transfer power from the people to the government.

In recent years, our public, transparent election system has been under heavy attack nationwide to place private, for-profit electronic election system companies with secret software between the voter and election outcomes. These electronic systems include electronic tabulators that count the votes, such as for Oregon's optical scan voting system.

The Oregon VRC's presentation takes an objective, straightforward approach to document how our election system has degenerated into a situation threatening our very democracy. Corrupt and heavily partisan election system companies, local, state and national-level political tactics such as massive-scale voter disenfranchisement, media silence, and public apathy have all contributed to a situation where, at the very least, people cannot have confidence in the reported results, or, at the most, election fraud determines the outcomes.

There are ways for We the People to save our democracy. Find out what is being done by grassroots activists, and how everyone can help, to return integrity and transparency to our election system. Find out how this all relates to Oregon and its popular vote-by-mail election system.
